Avon’s Skin So Soft is only recommended and approved as a bath oil, per Avon, but many animal lovers and horse people swear by Skin So Soft for keeping pesky flies away and creating a shiny coat on a horse. I’m one of them. We used Skin So Soft on my horses coat every summer and kept the bugs away. Both Field & Stream and Outdoor Life magazines have published articles about the benefits of Skin So Soft as a bug deterrent.
I’ve tried everything on my horse during the summer months to help keep the flies and gnats from bothering her. The sprays are expensive and filled with smelly ingredients that I was never comfortable with. The barn manager used to swear by Skin So Soft so I decided to try. Thankfully, it worked well! Not only did it keep the flys and gnats away for the day, but it smelled great and made my horses coat shinier.
Attention though- ONLY the original bath oil Skin So Soft will work. If you choose to purchase a scented version, the scent will ATTRACT bugs. The blueish bottle of Original Skin So Soft bath oil is the only oil that will work to keep the fly’s and gnats away from your horse or dog or yourself. Vanilla or Lavender Skin So Soft won’t give you the effect you are looking for, but you will smell amazing!
You will have to reapply the Skin So Soft to your horse daily, as it will wear off. Buy a large bottle and mix it with water per the recipe below and keep it in a spray bottle. Be sure not to spray into your horses eyes. Skin So Soft smells earthy, or herbal scented, many people enjoy the scent, make sure you put a little on yourself as well!

How To Apply Avon Skin So Soft to Your Horse
Start with a clean horse. Once you create the Skin So Soft recipe of your choosing from above, you will lightly spray your horse from her hoofs up. Pay close attention not to spray in your horses eyes. I will spray extra Skin So Soft on my horses tail so she’s able to distribute more as she swishes her tail around. Brush your horse lightly after applying to distribute evenly. Repeat daily.
Skin So Soft Barn Tips
Not only do I use Skin So Soft on my horse, but I spray it on ALL of the screen windows. The oil will lightly cling to the screen and keep those little no-see-ums and gnats from getting in.
I also use Skin So Soft on some of my tack and leather. The oil will keep the leather soft and supple while adding a light shine.
I’ll produce a video of how to make the Skin So Soft bug spray soon and post it here to this site, but I’m sure you’ll figure it out! The video I attached is from a youtuber named Horse Sense. I hope it helps.
It’s funny to think that the amazing bath oil I use to keep the skin on my body soft and shiny is also a great way to keep bugs off myself and my animals. What is your favorite way to use Avon Skin So Soft? Share it below and let us know!
